Transport Infrastructure
ROAD TRANSPORT
HANOI – HAI PHONG – QUANG NINH EXPRESSWAY
This is a key transport corridor linking three major economic, political and tourism centres in northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh.
Coastal expressway
This expressway has helped complete the coastal expressway infrastructure of the northern coastal region and the Red River Delta.
Interprovincial road and bridge network
Between 2015 and 2020, Hai Phong built about 45 bridges, notably the Tan Vu–Lach Huyen sea-crossing bridge, approximately 16 km long including its approach roads.
Road network
To meet current rapid-development needs, the city road network continues to expand, upgrade and improve.
RAIL TRANSPORT
Hai Phong railway plan for 2021–2030
• Complete the renovation, upgrading and effective operation of existing railways, and build facilities that protect railway safety corridors and grade-separated road–rail crossings.
• Study an electrified 380-km Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong railway with 1,435 mm gauge and a 120-km Nam Dinh–Thai Binh–Hai Phong–Quang Ninh coastal railway with 1,335 mm gauge
• Build a new 99.7-km, 1,435-mm railway linking Lach Huyen and Dinh Vu ports.
AIR TRANSPORT
Cat Bi International AirportCategory 4E, ICAO
Capable of receiving current and future international and domestic flights
MARITIME TRANSPORT
• Hai Phong’s seaport system is being strongly developed. Since 2019, Lach Huyen deep-water port has officially been put into operation.
• The operator of Tan Cang Hai Phong International Container Port (TC-HITC), the first unit to operate two berths at Lach Huyen deep-water port, considers this a milestone: the leading northern seaport can receive large vessels carrying 12,000 TEU and 132,000 DWT, shipping northern imports and exports directly to Europe and the Americas instead of using transshipment through another port.
INLAND WATERWAY TRANSPORT
• Inland waterway transport is an important link in Hai Phong’s logistics development.
• Five main inland waterways connect the Hai Phong port area. Notably, barges with a capacity of 128 TEU can operate continuously along the approximately 120-km route from Hai Phong port through the Cam, Kinh Thay, Thai Binh and Duong rivers to Tan Cang Que Vo inland port (ICD).
• With an inland-waterway network of nearly 2,700 km, about 40% of the national total, and a newly implemented fee-reduction policy, many logistics experts expect Hai Phong to attract more container cargo to waterways and relieve road transport.
